Sometimes, what you want… just doesn’t exist. I had a conversation with my uncle about a year ago. He is one of the most inspiring men I know. If you ever need a pep talk, let me know and I’ll connect you two. He told me that in order to get where I want to be in life, I shouldn’t simply wait for the right opportunity to come along. I need to seek it out. And if it can’t be found? Well, then create what you want!
While at the time, this advice seemed a bit esoteric, it couldn’t be more applicable now, and I think that the reason for that is now I have a trajectory. I have a plan and a vision, and it’s something I am seriously passionate about. I know what I want now. And it’s up to me to get myself there.
I’ve recently struck up a conversation about creating an internship position that would be both beneficial to my future career and work that I am passionate about. I am working on a long (and I mean long!) term project to completely change print media, while working in publishing, something I have always known I was destined for. This is absolutely what I am meant to be doing, and it is absolutely where I am meant to be going.
The only reason I am on this path right now is because I took the initiative. I took the metaphorical bull by his metaphorical horns, and I am making something actual and important happen.
And here’s the thing: it’s also up to you to get yourself wherever you want to go. If you run in a direction and hit a dead end, take another route! But always—always—remain on course. Just because you take a different road doesn’t mean you won’t get to your destination.
The greatest barriers to creating your own future, in my opinion, are the very things that this organization is working to reverse: the idea that we are maybe not worth it and that we don’t want to appear cocky. So let me tell you:
Taking control of your fate is exactly what you should be doing.
Claiming what you want from this life is not selfish or cocky or wrong in any way: it’s your birth right.
Go for it lady! The worst that can happen is a temporary setback (because you wouldn’t let a setback equal failure!), but think of what would happen if you don’t go for it.
A dear, dear friend has the following quote from Mark Twain as her email signature: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
So seriously… what are you waiting for?
Got a dream, goal, or straight up want? YOU have the power to make it so. Rid yourself of mental blocks by talking yourself out of taking action, and instead put a plan into motion to take steps to GET what you want!
Alyssa grew up on a diet of grilled cheese, books, and ice cream with books predominating. She recently graduated with a Master’s degree in English and lives in her favorite place with her favorite husband (she only has one). Post-graduation, her plans are to start a new women’s magazine that leaves women feeling GREAT about who they are, and to open a publishing house for untapped talent.
