Music has always been a constant in my life. It’s always been one of the few things to keep me sane, drown my sorrows, or even continue to uplift my spirits on a sunshiny day. Some of my fondest memories are just driving along I-5 on the west coast blasting some classic rock n roll and some 90s boy band ballads. Maybe it’s because I’ve always wanted my own soundtrack, something out of your favourite movie or that one string of scenes that changed your life, that I always have my iPod and earphones close. Or maybe it’s because I’ve been chasing perfection my entire life and music was the one way I came even remotely close to being 100% at anything.
What I’m trying to say, I guess, is we all have to find that one thing that makes us feel perfect. That makes us feel like we’re having a constant out of body experience, even if for just a moment or two. And that makes us feel out of our element. Whether it is with a pen in your hand or on stage in front of thousands of people, whatever makes you feel perfect—hold onto that, hold it close. Whatever keeps you moving and grooving, whatever makes you feel like time has stopped and you’re moving on air, never let it go. Find your inner peace and run with it.
Sometimes, you just need to get away and music provides that escape. It brings you to some of your best, and yes, even your worst-memories. It makes you realize you’re not alone and that somebody out there, no matter how briefly the song lasts, has felt the same exact way. And sometimes, all you need to do to get back on track is to jump behind the wheel and blast your favourite song and sing along. Do what makes you happy and find your own personal soundtrack. Find the rhythm in the silence and find the beat in the crowded streets. Music is everywhere—you just need to know where to listen.
Everyone needs to plug into that thing that makes their soul smile. What's yours?
