I started running about 5 years ago. It was never something I really enjoyed doing, but I wanted to get back to being healthy and active and running is something you can do anywhere, anytime. My first few times out on the pavement I would only be 30-45 seconds in before I could feel myself getting winded, out of breath and needing to stop. That didn’t impede my goal, though, of building more physical activity into my daily routine. I just knew that I was really going to have to work at it, so I did. A few weeks went by of running about 3 times a week and soon my seconds turned into a little over a minute and then two. By the time a month hit, I was running for five minutes straight.
Once my routine became regular, I began setting goals for myself to stay motivated. So in the fall of 2010 I signed up for my first 5k. My goal for this race: to run the whole thing. Time didn’t matter for me on this one; I just wanted to run it.
A smile beamed across my face when I crossed the finish line of that race. I had done it. 3.2 miles complete! Fast forward to 2014, I’ve ran a half dozen 5k races and 2 8k’s. In all of them I never stopped until I reached the finish line. Up the hills I ran faster, when my legs started to hurt, I pushed harder, sometimes I slowed down to a jog, but I never stopped.
It still amazes me how far I’ve come from those 30 second intervals. From the time where running was a chore. Now, it’s a challenge. It’s something I do to better myself, push my limits and prove to myself that I’m stronger than I think I am.
We all have those moments. Moments where we feel frustrated and we want to give up. Times when we don’t think the struggles are worth it. It’s in those moments that we find who we truly are. So when you find yourself struggling to get to the top of the mountain or the current seems too rough to swim to shore, don’t give up. Deep down inside of you is where you will find all the strength you need to get to where you need to be.
We are all stronger than we think we are. Inside of us all is a girl who believes in where we are going. One who strives to push us past that hurdle and help us reach our destination. Don’t lose that girl in moments of doubt. Find her, and she will guide you through it.
So go ahead, go try something new, something different. Challenge yourself to be the best you that you can be!
