Treat Yourself to Love

By: Devin Riggs, Regular Contributor

Valentine’s Day has never been a favorite of mine. For a long time it was because I was single. Then it became overrated, over indulgent, and much too much for my tastes regardless of my relationship status.

The cynics and skeptics would say it is a holiday created by Hallmark, chocolate companies, and flower shops to make a little extra cash (and by a little I mean a whole hell of a lot).

And while that may be true, I’ve started to believe that it’s also a good time to reflect on what love really means to me, and the kind of love I really think should be celebrated.

Whether you’re in a brand new relationship, a long term relationship, or you’ve just gotten out of a relationship, I think there’s something to be said for taking this particular “Hallmark Holiday” to start loving and appreciating someone who you might not spend much time doting on.

It’s a great opportunity to treat yo’ self (Parks & Recreation fan, right here ya’ll).

In a social media world where your relationship status is a hot topic of tweets and Instagram photos…why not make your relationship with yourself the priority?

Take yourself out for a meal. Go see a movie. For my birthday last year I bought myself a bouquet of flowers. Give yourself the opportunity to do something you love to do, just because you love it. Take that extra selfie because you’re having an amazing hair day! Bask in your beauty!! Buy yourself some chocolate. Buy that expensive and extravagant prize you’ve been eyeing for months. Write yourself a love note, listing all the things you love about you

Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you.

I’ll be the first to confess that I’m not an expert on self-love. I’m still a struggling beginner stumbling my way through the journey of self-acceptance. I have to work at identifying the quirky parts of my personality and embracing them. Some days are better than others.

So I will offer you this thought. Don’t let Hallmark and the consumer industry turn you cynical, or raise your expectations so high that others struggle to meet them. Use this day to start the journey toward loving yourself. Make Valentine’s Day for you, about you, by you!

One step at a time, fall in love with yourself.
