The Wind in your Sails

By Daniella Aryeh, Guest Blogger

Have you ever taken stock of who you surround yourself with? If you haven’t in a while, you should. The type of people you’re surrounded by is very important.

Everyday we allow, and even encourage, people to dump garbage into our minds and into our lives. Contrary to popular belief, eating food is not the only way we consume nutrients. We also consume nutrients through our eyes and ears.

The things we put into our bodies determines what we put back into the world; how we act towards ourselves and towards others. The things you hear on the radio, what you watch on television, and what you hear from the people that are around you impact your mood, sometimes without you even realizing it.

We live in an age where everyone strives to be healthy and attempts to stay away from things that can compromise our health. We try to eat right and exercise, because it’s good for our body. And that’s great! But we also have to stay away from people that are toxic to our lives. It’s important to steer clear of anyone too negative, miserable, greedy, or obnoxious. These people are poisonous. They drain you. They tear you down and remind you of your shortcomings. They gossip. They aren’t there for you when you need them.

I don’t think that these people are necessarily evil. They are trapped in a cycle themselves. But that’s their problem, not yours. You can’t fix those people. They can only help themselves. You have to focus on yourself and what’s right for you. Focus on making yourself a better, happier person. And then maybe you can become an example for those people.

So give yourself some space from these people. Or else you might end up just like them. If you keep hanging out with toxic people, you will end up picking up their habits and qualities.

Hang out with people who encourage you and empower you to become the best version of yourself. You deserve that. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to be you.

I once heard Alexis Jones say that your friends will be the winds to your sails.  Picture an actual sailboat. It won’t move unless there’s wind. If you are not surrounded by people who challenge you, push you, and who hold you accountable for your actions, you will never make it to where you want to go.

So ask yourself, what does your crew look like? What types of people are you surrounded by? Take a good hard look at the people you have chosen to be close to you.

Don’t make time for fake, negative people in your life. Find quality people to surround yourself by, and you’ll be infinitely happier.

Let's Chat! Have you ever been surrounded by negativity? How did you overcome this and begin living a healthier, more positive life? Tell us about it here!

Hey Daniella! Great article! I hope you don’t mind but I used your quote “Your friends will be the winds to your sails. ⛵ It won’t move unless there is wind. If you are not surrounded by people who push you, challenge you, and who hold you accountable for your actions, you will never make it to where you want to go.- Daniella.” In my facebook album. You can see it at I think you make some great points. I believe you are a combination of the 5 people so it’s very important who we surround ourselves with <3 Ms. Tree Pants
