Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night, realizing you didn't send in the rent check or forgot to get back to your friend about dinner plans? And as you begin to mentally go through all of your to-dos, you start to feel totally stressed out and overwhelmed?

We want to do it all. We really do. From having the kick-ass career to being the great mom, best friend, and lover. But when we allow our self-care to go out the window, we are not only less productive, but we’re also unable to take care of the many facets of our lives.
I love talking about the topic of personal productivity because as a Self-Love Coach for women, I know how we can take on so much and end up spinning out of control.
I know, because I have been there myself.
When I first started my own business, I felt so completely overwhelmed. I was busy all the time, and yet never felt productive.
My day looked something like this:
I’d wake up to my alarm feeling drowsy and exhausted. Before even getting out of bed, I’d grab my phone and check my email. I’d roll out of bed and skip my meditation practice and exercise routine, feeling the need to get to work immediately. I’d scarf down breakfast, throw my hair in a bun and quickly dress (often in sweats if I wasn’t leaving the house). My fiancé would come home that evening to find me still inside, furiously working away. We’d have dinner together but I’d only talk about work, which didn’t do much for our relationship, and I’d continue to “get things done” until right before bedtime.
So, what changed?
I went to a great workshop called “Playing with Confidence.” We were asked to look at how much of our time and energy was being spent in various areas of our lives. I wrote down the following categories of my life:
When I assessed how I spent my time I realized that almost ALL of my energy was going into work. And yet I wasn’t feeling productive.
Clearly this needed a major overhaul.
Instead, I decided to dedicate less time to work and more time to other areas of my life. Some ideas I came up with was that I would:
- Spend 5-10 minutes morning and evening in meditation
- Take 45 minutes in the morning for a shower, lovingly dress myself in gorgeous clothes, and do my hair and makeup
- Get out of the house to do my work or go for long walks
- Make a point for exercise and yoga 4-5 times per week
- Schedule a date night with my fiancé
- Stop working in the evenings to have time for myself
Not only did I overhaul my schedule, but also had to do some major self-love work. Yes, I was overwhelmed and pushing myself out of my comfort zone by starting a new business. But where in my life had I been successful before? What skills and tenacity could I bring to the table?
I had to decide to love myself exactly where I was in that moment and to trust that it was unfolding perfectly.
The funny thing is that when I started spending less physical time working and more time cultivating self-love and a balanced routine, I found myself being extremely more productive. The time I did spend on my work was more focused. I was happier, and my business and life started blooming in ways I never anticipated.
Do I have days when I slip up? Of course!
But the difference between now and then is that I can get back up, dust myself off and realize that today is a new day.
