In our lives, we are faced with taking on the world head on with the people we choose to stand alongside. The beauty in the struggle to find our place in the world is in the fact that we choose who we surround ourselves with and how we allow external factors affect our perceptions on the world.
There was a time in the past few months when I would feel unhappy for no particular reason. I would tell myself it was the weather affecting my mood or lack of sleep even if they weren’t the issues. I went on with my days not necessarily enjoying them and drifting through life trying to get to the end of the day, week, or month. This was not a healthy way to live. Eventually, I realized what the problem truly was and started to begin my days with making a mental list of things to be grateful for so as to set the tone for the rest of the day.
It sounded silly at first, but rewiring my brain to count the blessings I have in my life made my days more positive than they were ever before. Every day, I remind myself of the people who make me happy to be alive.
I am grateful for the friends I surround myself with. They are dependable, reliable, and loving. They are with me through my greatest triumphs and my lowest points and their faith in me never wavers. They accept me for who I am and their confidence in my abilities pushes me to be the best version of myself every single day. They say that friends are the family you get to choose; if that’s true, then I have a pretty amazing family!
I am also eternally grateful for my mom. She has sacrificed so much for me to be where and who I am today. She has celebrated my victories and consoled in me in my losses, but not once has she stopped believing in the greatness I have within me and the beautyFULL person I have become. She is my best friend and when your mom is your best friend, you feel like your life is that much better.
But most of all, I am grateful for myself. I am grateful that I have become a more loving and caring person to my friends and family. I love that I am becoming more comfortable in my skin and continue to stop caring about what other people perceive me to be. The only opinion that matters at the end of the day is my own, and if I think I’m doing a swell job, then it’s a good day. I am grateful that I have found myself taking great strides in being the best version of myself and inspiring others to do the same. It’s a beautiful thing when you stop and realize how blessed you are and how amazing life is.
