I have always been a writer. Long before I ever wrote Tear Stained Beaches or Holding on to Georgia, I was always bringing something to life with words on paper. My passion, my truth, it was always in storytelling. It was the best way I found to express my feelings. When life’s plans got derailed, or when I first saw that boy in my 9th grade math class who stole my heart with just one look, I wrote about it. No matter what was happening in my life, writing was my solace. It was my escape. It kept me balanced and drove me to move forward. And now that I look back on it, I realize it also preserved my memories. Every poem I wrote, every song that was created was a representation of a big, important moment.
If you were to read the abundance of works I’ve created over the years you will quickly see that they are so much more than words on a piece of paper you hold in your hand. They are a magnifying glass into my soul. Each line, every song details a piece of my journey on this road we call life.
Every now and then I look back through my files and read them. Doing so gives me a better understanding of myself and why I am who I am today. It reminds me of how quickly months turn into years and gives me a better hold on appreciating what is in front of me here and now.
It’s so important to have an outlet in life and I am forever grateful that writing is mine. It has been my shoulder to lean, an ear to whisper my secrets into and a canvas to create my wildest dreams. Through it I have built my story one word at a time.
I encourage all of you if you haven’t yet, to find your solace. It doesn’t have to be writing, it can be anything in your life, the one thing that makes sense when the world around you doesn’t. It will be the one thing you can always turn to as you continue on this road of self discovery, your saving grace in times when you feel lost or alone.
What is your passion? What can you hold onto that will carry you through even the toughest of times? Find it and when you do, hold on tight.
Whether you call it your passion, your calling, or the solace for your soul--it's important to be able to connect to something bigger than you!
- Pay attention to the activities or experiences that seem to keep you humming for hours. THAT'S where your passion lies! Follow that energy and see where it takes you!
