Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. - Hilary Cooper
I love quotes. I’ve always been able to find ones that I can relate to at any given time. Whether it’s about love, loss, heartache, or strength, one always seems to fit. I thought the one above was perfect for my post today.
We are defined by our moments. We are defined by our actions. We are defined by our choices. But we are not defined by a number. We are not defined by the size of our jeans. We are not defined by how much we weigh. So many young women these days have an obsession with trying to be perfect. All of their time is spent trying to be who they think they should be instead of embracing who they are. Perfection does not exist. No one is perfect, but we are all beautiful just the way we are.
I do not want young girls growing up believing that in order for someone to love them they need to be a size 0. We are not defined by a number. The number on the tag sewn to the back of your jeans is not what determines love. We are loved because we are loyal, trustworthy, and dependable. Because we make people laugh, lift them up when they are down, and make their world brighter just by being in it.
Success is not defined by how much you weigh when you step on the scale in the morning. I have a job that pays the bills. One that allows me to travel to new places and gives me enough spare time to do other things I’m passionate about. I have a family who loves me and friends who I’ve known for more than a decade that I still talk to almost every day. I am able to go out with my friends after work and try new restaurants and explore new places in this city I call my home. That is what makes me successful. I did not get to where I am today because of the number on the scale. We are not defined by a number.
The number on the scale is only a number. The size of your jeans is only a size. Do not let society make you believe you have to waste the precious time you have trying to fit their definition of perfect. We are all put on this earth to do extraordinary things. To pave our own paths. Creating perfection is a losing battle. Instead, focus on creating your own destinies. We choose the person that we become. We write our own definitions and those definitions should be what inspire us each and every day.
If you were to find your name in the dictionary, what would your definition be?
Here’s mine: The girl who believed she could do anything and did.
Be Yourself. Love Yourself. Define Yourself.
Courtney was born and raised in a suburb outside of Rochester, NY. She now calls Charlotte, NC home. Each day she lives by the motto that we create the life we imagine for ourselves. Her debut novel Tear Stained Beaches was released in 2013, her second novel is currently in editing and she has begun work on novel #3. Having a passion for cheerleading most of her life, it’s no surprise her spare time is spent currently as the head coach for a local middle school team and also as part of the Charlotte Hounds Major League Lacrosse dance team.
