I've always enjoyed the idea of a new start: fresh paper, clean laundry, and a new year. Paper waiting to be ink smeared, laundry ready for grass stains, and a new year thoroughly eventful. January has always been so full of possibility—it’s fresh, it’s new, it’s magical.
And just like every year, that shiny new start fades into failed resolutions and monotonous days that blend together and all of a sudden another year is almost gone and I wonder where all that potential went. Where does the magic go?
My resolutions dwindle out around March and I always look back disappointed I didn’t make more out of my year.
So I’ve decided that this year I’m not going to make resolutions. If anything I will only make one: to recognize the potential of each new day. To remind myself that starting over isn’t just for January. It’s for every day. Every day is new and ripe with possibilities. Every day is filled with potential. I don’t have to wait for January to come back around. I can start over whenever I want, whenever I need.
You can’t plan for everything (trust me, I’ve tried). Life throws in some curve balls. You have to be ready to adjust at any moment. The important thing is you get to choose when to make changes in your life. It doesn’t have to be because the Earth has made one full rotation around the sun. It can be because you need a change. Because you need a new start. Maybe it’s because you find your dreams have changed.
Resolve to take control of your life. Resolve to change your resolutions if they aren’t working. Resolve to live in the moment. Resolve to work toward small goals. Resolve to make more thoughtful choices. Resolve to laugh more. Resolve to tell people how you feel more. Resolve to make the world better, even if it’s in small subtle ways.
Resolve to make each day the beginning of something great.
Make a life you’re proud of.
I wish all of you luck on your resolutions. I hope you stick with them. I hope you make the most of 2015. And if you find that you are not: don’t wait for January 1st 2016 to make your life better. Start today. Start every day like it’s the beginning of the rest of your life.
