Music Mondays: Solange

When your big sister is Beyoncé, it may seem like an almost impossible task to step out of her talented shadow. Solange has certainly managed to break free and establish her own career in the limelight, however, as a versatile singer, DJ, model, and certified fashion icon. The vivid video for her latest single, "Losing You," was shot in Cape Town, South Africa and features fantastic dance moves along with colorful outfits. There's a hint of early Janet Jackson on the track, which makes sense since Solange grew up idolizing the star.

Solange studied dance and theater as a child in Houston, but didn't really embark on a singing career until she performed at an amusement park at 5 years old. She even served as one of the backup dancers for her sister's group, Destiny's Child. It wasn't until several years later that her father, who also managed Beyoncé's music career, took her under his professional wing to navigate her solo ambitions. Solange's debut album, Solo Star, came out in 2003. She probably gained more attention, though, when she married at just 17 and had a son, Daniel Julez Smith, Jr. After her divorce in October 2007, Solange put the focus back on her music. Her more stylized follow-up, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, debuted in 2008 and centered on old-school soul. The enterprising star has also appeared in several films, including Bring It On: All or Nothing, and was selected by Rimmel London for a modeling campaign. We're real fans of Solange's free-spirited personality, her unabashed talent, and refusal to be defined by her megastar sibling.
