Music Mondays: Noisettes

Blues, punk, jazz, rock, funk, soul, disco, and pop. That's just a sampling of the various styles the multifaceted British band Noisettes have managed to harness through energetic stage shows and multilayered albums. The undefinable group's just released third offering, Contact, features a wide variety of engaging tracks. Take the feel-good "Winner" with its positive lyrics and inescapable beat. The video is a colorful combination of dramatic gambling scenes juxtaposed with lively performance shots.

Noisettes was originally made up of vocalist/bassist Shingai Shoniwa, guitarist Dan Smith, and Jamie Morrison on drums. Shingai was raised by her Zimbabwean single mother in South London and even once trained for the circus. Dan counted Jimmy Page as a hero growing up and Jamie used to spend as many as 11 hours a day practicing the drums. Shingai and Dan actually met in music class and discovered Jamie on an episode of LaterâÂ¦ with Jools Holland. Now down to a duo, Shingai and Dan have always embraced experimentation, refusing early on to be defined by one specific genre. Just look at the three distinct albums the band has put out so far. The 2007 debut, Whatâs The Time Mr Wolf? was certainly more guitar-influenced, while the 2009 follow-up called Wild Young Hearts included elements of R&B, disco, and straight-forward pop. "Some bands stick with the same style forever,” Shingai stated. "For us, making music means keeping our ears open.” The fact that this irrepressible band is always willing to explore new sounds and methods of songwriting as well as the group's praised dedication for putting on really elaborate live shows helped solidify us as fans.
