Even though this Southern California band has spent the majority of the last decade off the charts, No Doubt’s latest album is catapulting the group back into the limelight. The lead off single, “Settle Down,” plays up that trademark ska sound mixed with the usual dose of attitude and Top 40 undertones. A fleet of mack trucks served as the backdrop for the track’s upbeat video, which actively showcases the reinvigorated spirit and united front of band members.
No Doubt was formed by Gwen Stefani and her brother Eric back in 1986. The band was definitely not an overnight sensation, though. Original lead singer, John Spence, committed suicide and the groups first record on Interscope in the early '90s failed to make an impact. After the lineup went through a bit of reshuffling, including placing Gwen front and center as lead vocalist, the band started to experience some success. Just A Girl was the real breakthrough track off the bands Tragic Kingdom offering a few years later. Singles like Spiderwebs and the iconic Dont Speak helped certify the album platinum several times over. No Doubt followed that up with Return of Saturn in 2000, and subsequently with the album Rock Steady. There was turmoil in the band, however, thanks to the conclusion of Gwen and bassist Tony Kanals long-term romance. Gwen eventually also found success with an electric solo career, and even has a high-end fashion line called L.A.M.B. Now with Push and Shove due out later this year, the foursome seems to have put all the drama aside and are focusing squarely on the music. We absolutely love the bands unique sound and, of course, Gwens ferocious girl power swagger.
