Nina Nesbitt may only be a teenager, but she's managed to make music on her own terms. The singer/songwriter didn't perform in front of an audience until high school and then began posting covers to YouTube. What's even more amazing is that she only started playing the guitar a few years ago. Her unconventional musical journey is what makes songs like the stylistic, “Just Before Goodbye," all the more impressive. The track's feisty lyrics and Nina's delightfully wispy voice help define the piece, while the rather low-key video simply showing her performing the song seems to match up well with her relaxed and authentic personality.
The rising star grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her Swedish mom introduced her to ABBA along with Eva Cassidy and her father always enjoyed Roxy Music, but Nina's first passion was writing short stories. An admittedly shy kid, although Nina learned to play the piano at age nine and started writing song lyrics instead of short stories, she didn't start performing in public until her final year at primary school. She played during acoustic nights at Edinburgh's Electric Circus or wherever her young age didn't prevent her from performing. She also started posting covers of songs on YouTube featuring her take on tracks by Kelly Clarkson, Ellie Goulding and Taylor Swift. She actually taught herself chords on the guitar and it was one of her original songs that kick-started her music career when she played it for Ed Sheeran backstage at one of his gigs. He ended up bringing Nina onstage for several shows and she also caught the ear of Example. One of the reasons we love this folksy pop artist is her refusal to sign a major label record deal until she fully developed her sound. She put out two independently-released EPs, Live Take and The Apple Tree, all while continuing to build an audience. The Scotland native finally did sign a deal with Island Records and her first major label single, Boy, came out this past October. Nina's definitely one-to-watch and we can't wait to see and hear what she does next!
