Music Mondays: Megan & Liz

This dynamic duo may make pop anthems and catchy ballads, but the sister act also can create songs with a message. “Are You Happy Now?” is all about the traumatic toll bullying can take. The video was actually directed by Shenae Grimes of 90210 fame on the set of the hit CW show.

“The song is about knowing that there are other people out there who feel the way you do,” Liz says on the group’s Web site. “Most of the time, the bullies have experienced something bad themselves. We felt really strong about this message. We have our ballads and upbeat songs, but we wanted to write something that meant even more. This tells a story and can potentially help other people.”

Megan & Liz are fraternal twins who although originally from Michigan are now based in Nashville. The ambitious girls used YouTube as a way to get their music out to the public by uploading a video for the song, “This Note” back in 2007. From the start, Megan & Liz made a conscious effort to connect with their growing fan base by taking requests for cover songs and even personally responding to viewers.

The biggest break for the sisters came in 2009 when they appeared on Oprah and virtually met one of their biggest fans, Taylor Swift. Since then, the duo have been independently releasing original music via iTunes, and digital sales keep climbing. I AM THAT GIRL recognizes the power of Megan & Liz to connect with audiences and invited the sisters to participate in the White House roundtable discussion. Alexis even uses the duo’s anti-bullying message in “Are You Happy Now?” when she speaks at schools, including her recent presentation at her former middle school.
