Music Mondays: Mandisa

“I’m in a new place and I want to proclaim some things to my listeners and one of them is that they are overcomers,” writes pop sensation Mandisa on her website. “Whether or not you feel it, it’s a fact. We are overcomers.” Overcoming is a phrase and sentiment that resonates with the I AM THAT GIRL community, made up of girls and young women who have stared down personal Gremlins, cleared seemingly insurmountable hurdles, and made a personal pact with themselves to believe in their innate self-worth and value. Mandisa is the soundtrack to so much of what inspires and energizes this growing league of amazing gals.

Mandisa hails from California and is a graduate of Nashville's Fisk University. She garnered national attention as a contestant on the fifth season of American Idol where she placed ninth. Like many Idol cohorts who glimpsed but did not grasp the brass ring, Mandisa's musical journey was hardly at an end once her time on Idol was done. After signing a deal with Sparrow Records, Mandisa released her first album, True Beauty in 2007. The album garnered her three GRAMMY nominations and set her on the path for pop success. Her third album, What If We Were Real contained the hit "Stronger," which became an anthem for Good Morning America's Robin Roberts in her very public health challenge. Mandisa sang the song live on GMA the morning that Roberts returned to the desk in her role as full-time anchor.

Overcomer hits a personal note with Mandisa in more ways than one. Not only does she believe in her universal message of resilience and fortitude in the face of challenge, but she has lived this ideal in her efforts to shed 100 lbs. and adopt a healthier lifestyle and a more positive outlook about body image. Writing about the single "Press On," Mandisa states: "I’m proclaiming I’m going to press on no matter what comes my way. For me, in that song specifically I’m speaking about my weight loss journey. I’ve come a long way. I’ve lost over 100 lbs. but I still have some work to do. I’m going to press on through this. I’m going to make it and I’m going to get to the finish line."

Get your Monday started off right with a little "Press On" and be sure to check out all the amazing tunes on I AM THAT GIRL's Music Mondays playlist, updated each week!
