Music Mondays: Lissie

Lissie is the true definition of a rebel. She was thrown out of high school, sold raw honey to make ends meet and instead of staying in Los Angeles as her music career began to blossom, the singer/songwriter took up residence in a farmhouse out in Ojai, California. Lissie also steps outside the conventional music industry box by performing fantastic covers of hit songs like Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance," Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” the classic Fleetwood Mac track “Go Your Own Way” and even Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness.” Her original music is a mix of rock and folk with hints of blues as well as pop influences. The video for her song, “Everywhere I Go” off her debut studio offering, Catching A Tiger is simply stunning, especially paired with Lissie's powerful multilayered voice.

The rebel was born in Rock Island, Illinois on the banks of the Mississippi River. Part of Lissie's musical inspiration came from her grandfather, an international barbershop quartet champion. At age nine, she even landed the lead in a local dinner theatre production of the musical Annie. After learning a few guitar cords and playing in local venues, the ambitious artist headed to Los Angeles where she took up with a handful of other artists to form the Beachwood Rockers' Society.

After recording some sample tracks, Lissie began to get noticed and eventually was able to record her 12-track debut album. Her career keeps reaching new heights. Lissie just played at Coachella yesterday and has another set this coming Sunday out in Indio, California. We are completely enamored with Lissie's rebel spirit, not to mention her amazing and almost otherworldly voice. Her unwillingness to alter her image to fit some version of an industry standard has impressed us to no end.

"So much of my process is instinct and it's natural," she professed on her Web site. "Even in photo shoots I won't wear concealer, I don't want to look like someone painted my face. Everything I do I want to feel natural; I want it to mean something to me. If it doesn't feel natural I can't do it."
