Kacey Musgraves has proven that winning isn't everything. Even though the East Texas native only placed seventh on her season of Nashville Star, she managed to make valuable connections in the Nashville music community. Kacey just released her debut album for Mercury Records, Same Trailer Different Park, last week and the young singer/songwriter is already drawing comparisons to Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. It's easy to see why with the thought-provoking single, "Merry Go 'Round," where the rising country star paints a rather realistic and reflective portrait of American expectations.
This country newcomer got her start pretty early by singing in church at just 8 years old. Kacey was already writing songs by age 9 while learning to play the guitar, harmonica and mandolin. She performed on the regional opry circuit and after graduating from high school, her family provided the funding for her first album. Kacey relocated to Austin before being selected for Nashville Star. The struggling artist then moved to Nashville in 2008, singing on other artists demos to make money. After meeting a couple of fellow songwriters, she started the process of collaboratively writing songs for her own record. Once she complied the 15 tracks that would comprise her album, Kacey headed out on tour with the likes of Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss and Lady Antebellum. She has also collaborated with other artists on songs for their albums, including Miranda Lambert. "Merry Go 'Round" came out this past September and was a smash single, garnering high praise from several critics. The song's provocative lyrics and flashback-style video helped Kacey earn three Academy of Country Music Award nominations. She's even set to be the opening act on Kenny Chesney's tour later this season. We've become big fans of Kacey's music and her willingness to write songs about topics not usually covered in country music.
