Music Mondays: Grimes

The word unique doesn't even begin to describe Grimes. She's practically a force of nature, enveloping listeners and critics alike in a storm of electronic-influenced pop supported by colorful and often jarring visuals. In the video for her song, "Genesis" off the album Visions, there appears to be an underlying Mad Max meets anime theme, which exists in wonderful contrast to the artist's whisper-like singing style.

Grimes is the alter ego of Vancouver native Claire Boucher. She studied ballet for over a decade and went on to study Russian literature as well as neuroscience at Montreal's McGill University. It was during this period in higher academia that Claire started performing and adopted her current stage name. The experimental tendencies of Grimes were present early on in her career. In 2010, she released two albums, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, which were available as free downloads. Grimes also put out a split EP with d'Eon called Darkbloom in 2011. Her critically-acclaimed release, Visions, came out in February of last year on the 4AD label. There's certainly a lot to love about this original artist. We're definitely fans of her music, but we really admire her ability to be unapologetically unconventional while still appealing to a wide fan base.
