Music Mondays: Diane Birch

Diane Birch proudly refers to herself as an “old soul.” That self-imposed title certainly makes sense considering her music calls to mind '70s-era singer/songwriters like Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks, and Carole King. Her track "Rewind" comes from the artist’s debut album, Bible Belt, and portrays a certain sense of purity from its piano-led melody to Diane’s stylized vocals. The video doesn’t really rely on any fancy effects or camera tricks, instead just focusing on the talented singer’s journey through the city.

Growing up in a very religious family, Diane spent her youth in far-off destinations, including Zimbabwe, South America, and Australia. When she was 10 years old, the clan settled in Portland, Oregon as part of a strict religious community. Diane found creative ways to rebel, though, especially when she attended church in a floor-length black cape. She always had an affinity for music, even playing the piano with the help of the Suzuki Method. Her musical education would eventually grow to span everything from the Beatles to Fleetwood Mac all the way to psychedelic music and jazz. As a grown up, Diane moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of becoming a film composer, but she took on some gigs as a pianist to make ends meet. She didnt start composing her own songs until being required by a class to create a performance piece. Diane began to gain notoriety thanks to her Myspace page and headed to London after a manager encouraged her to relocate. She went on to sign a deal with Steve Greenbergs S-Curve Records and moved to New York City. The rising star released Bible Belt back in May 2009 and has been steadily garnering praise for her old-school style. We love Dianes rebellious nature and absolutely crave her throwback storyteller vibe.
