Music Mondays: Delta Rae

Americana, gospel-influenced pop and a reincarnation of Fleetwood Mac have all been used to describe Delta Rae. Despite these classifications, the six-member band is a decidedly original force, combining four strong vocalists with uplifting and thought-provoking lyrics. Of course, tracks like "If I Loved You," which actually features Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, don't do much to quell the comparisons, but there's something so appealingly straightforward about Delta Rae's melodies and vocals. A noticeable earnest exists in this palpable single and the video's basic black backdrop while the group performs the riveting number only amplifies that sense of urgency.

This sensational sextet originally started off with three siblings. Ian, Eric and Brittany grew up in the Holljes household listening to James Taylor, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, and yes, Fleetwood Mac. The family moved around quite a bit, but always considered Durham, North Carolina home. Ian and Eric grew up with a passion for songwriting and eventually convinced Brittany to form a band. The newly-formed group also recruited childhood friend, Elizabeth Hopkins. About a year later, the band brought in drummer Mike McKee and bassist Grant Emerson to round out the group's sound. Delta Rae began a hefty touring schedule, learning the ins and outs of live performances, and secured a reputation as an enthralling, robust live act. It was a meeting with Seymour Stein in New York City that led to a record deal after the band sang a rather impromptu version of "Hey Hey Hey." Delta Rae's debut album, Carry the Fire, was released by Sire Records last June and the band has been gaining fans ever since. We're definitely part of that new fan base, developing a sincere appreciation for the group's amazing harmonies and hopeful lyrics.
