Music Mondays: Christina Perri

By: Emily Algar, Regular Contributor

Honesty and Christina Perri, the 27-year-old singer/songwriter, go hand in hand. From her 60 plus tattoos, which document every single heartbreak or lesson learned on display for the whole world to see, to her second album which was released this month, entitled Head or Heart There is nothing Christina Perri believes that is too personal not to share.

In 2010 Perri wrote the now eponymous song “Jar of Hearts” that launched her career. She emailed the song to a friend, who decided to email it to another friend, who also happened to be the producer for the hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance. The producers of the show were impressed, Perri performed the song on the show, and the rest they say is history. “Jar of Hearts” sold 48,000 digital copies in its first week and peaked at no. 4 on the Billboard 200.

With her debut album Lovestrong, released in 2011 and selling 58,000 copies in its first week, to her four singles, including the song “A Thousand Years” written especially for The Twilight Saga, to non stop touring for 27 months, Christina Perri has finally realized her dream of becoming a singer.

Perri began writing in the winter of 2012 till the summer of 2013. The process involved a lot of crying on the floor and introspection, which culminated in the very first track of the album, “Trust,” but she knew exactly what the album would be about: the choice between trusting your head or your heart, or the combination of trusting both. Christina says of the album, “it is not a break up album. It’s not a break up thing. It’s definitely everything I’ve felt in the last three and half years.”

The music is definitely more introspective and soul searching than Lovestrong, particularly the second single “Burning Gold,” which documents the build up to her move to Los Angeles when she was 21. In her words: “a lot of times our dreams aren’t where we grew up. We have to find them.” The lyrics illustrate this concoction of emotions, fear, frustration, and ultimately courage. “Looking through the window to a world of dreams/I can see my future slip away/Honey you won’t get there if you don’t believe/I wish the wind would carry a change.”

The final song on the album, “I Believe” was originally written for a charity event, “To Write Love On Her Arms” (TWLOHA) for which Perri has been a long time supporter and was never meant to feature on the album. However, after seeing the fans having such visceral reactions to the song, she decided to have it as the closing track. The song is pretty much that comforting voice in the dark when you think you are all alone and are scared. “I believe that tomorrow is stronger than yesterday and I believe that your head is the only thing in your way/I wish that you could see your scars turn into beauty/I believe that today it’s ok to be not ok.”
