The introspective “32 Flavors” may have been released almost two decades ago, but the song’s message still resonates. Thought-provoking lines like, “I never tried to give my life meaning by demeaning you,” and “God help you if you are an ugly girl, course too pretty is also your doom” are even more powerful in this live version. Although it's been well-covered by other artists, listening to Ani perform her own song inspired by her own experiences is something to behold.
Ani grew up in Buffalo, New York where the folk singer began performing at age nine. As she got older, the eclectic musician hit the local music scene making quite an impact. When she took her considerable talent to New York City, she developed a loyal following sticking to an unrelenting schedule of live shows and self-promotion. From the onset, Ani wanted to create her music on her terms, so she produced records through her own indie label, Righteous Babe Records. Ani did encounter plenty of mainstream success with her album, Not a Pretty Girl, which contained "32 Flavors" and its Billboard charting follow-up, Dilate. She's put out more than 20 albums and earlier this year, Ani's first studio album in more than three years, Which Side Are You On? was released. Ani's mix of passion, rebellion and melody has had us hooked for years. Her unwavering commitment to independence is equally impressive.
