My favorite quality in a person is their ability to coherently speak their mind. I love when people defend their own opinions, rights, and convictions with passion. Jennifer Lawrence penned a letter in Lenny, a new email subscription from Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner. In it, she spoke of how absolutely infuriating it was that women were making less than their male counterparts in massively successful blockbuster films.
She definitely used my favorite quality- assertiveness and girl power.
After the Sony e-mail hack earlier this year, hateful emails were spread around like wildfire. It was also made known that the women who worked for Sony Pictures were making far less than the men they starred alongside. Lawrence wrote about how much of a double standard women in film are held to: “Again, this might have NOTHING to do with my vagina, but I wasn’t completely wrong when another leaked Sony email revealed a producer referring to a fellow lead actress in a negotiation as a ‘spoiled brat.’ For some reason, I just can’t picture someone saying that about a man.”
Lawrence also wrote that she was hesitant to negotiate her salary for fear of seeming like a brat- “…If I’m honest with myself, I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight. I didn’t want to seem ‘difficult’ or ‘spoiled.’”
She also brought up the point that men are praised for their negotiations- seen as more powerful and successful. However, when women ask for more money? They’re seen as stepping out of line.
Lawrence has starred beside leading men such as Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, and Hugh Jackman- and she has certainly held her own as a powerful female lead, so have the hundreds of actresses that have come before her and the ones that will come after her. So why are they not being treated with the same financial respect? You go, Jennifer!
So, Hollywood- when are you planning to get on her level?
How do you feel about unequal pay in Hollywood? Do you agree with Jennifer? Tell us below!
