With the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, we often forget, quite literally, to stop and smell the roses. It has become impossible to even think of doing anything leisurely because we spending out time thinking, “I could be doing something more productive.” It’s become too easy to lose sight of what we love when we’re racing to the next class, meeting, or appointment. We’re constantly being pulled every which way without giving ourselves time to recuperate. However, indulging in ourselves is probably one of the most productive things we can ever do.
The list of excuses we have for not doing something we want could go on forever, but the list of reasons why we should do what we want is short and sweet: simply because we love it. Whatever “it” may be for you, make time before taking on the day, do it before going to bed, or even take advantage of the small windows of free time throughout your day (like I am doing right now!) to feed your soul. Hang out with your girlfriends, call your mom, go to the gym, I don’t care! Just do something that is not related to what you do every day. For me, it’s heavily indulging in TV shows with my roommates and kickboxing three times a week. Doing different and fun activities will help you take a necessary step back from the stress and de-stress. The natural high we get from doing what we love transpires to the greater quality of work we do every day, because we become inspired.
On the days when you’re not feeling your best, indulge in you. Remind yourself of the things you love to do. Give yourself an hour out of your busy schedule, maybe even fifteen minutes if you’re pressed for time, in which you put yourself first. Unplug yourself from all social media. Meditate. Write in your journal. Breathe. Do anything that doesn’t have to do with work. All that matters is nurturing the mind, body, and soul in order to be the best version of yourself. This nurturing, in turn, encourages and inspires others to follow suit after seeing how calm and more optimistic you are. Our bodies are our temples and in order to live well, we must let ourselves breathe.
So indulge in you. You’ll thank yourself later.
