Let’s face it: there are a lot of unhealthy images going around on Pinterest. From thigh gaps and unhealthy workout routines to “the right bathing suit for every body type” (spoiler alert: according to the post, the right bathing suit for your body isn’t the one you like the most), it can be a dangerous place for those who are unconfident.
But this isn’t about Pinterest. This is about one small image I saw on Pinterest and how it affected my entire mindset.
“She’s not afraid.”
It said it in big, beautiful, handwritten letters.
“Why can’t I be that girl?” I thought. The one who isn’t afraid of anything.
Who isn’t afraid of anything? Any why wouldn’t you want to be afraid of anything?
When I first wanted to get involved with I AM THAT GIRL, I looked for a local chapter in my area and discovered the closest one was about two and a half hours away. Womp womp womp.
When I asked one of my friends how to get more involved when there isn’t a local chapter near me, she was super pumped and said I should start my own local chapter in my community.
Woah woah woah. Slow down there, sister. I just graduated college and don’t really have a big group of friends here, despite it being my hometown. The idea of starting an IATG: Grand Rapids chapter scared me. A lot.
Then I realized it’s exactly what I needed. I don’t have a big group of friends, but that doesn’t matter. What if my small group of friends became really close? And what if it started to grow as friends brought there friends, who in turn brought their friends? We could create a community for ourselves.
I signed up for it, but my fear didn’t go away. Even the day of the first meeting, as I kept getting texts from coworkers and friends saying they couldn’t make it for whatever reason, I thought about canceling the meeting and postponing it to another month.
But here’s the thing: postponing the thing I was afraid of wasn’t going to make it go away.
So what if there were only three of us (myself included) at the first IATG: Grand Rapids meeting? We had awesome conversations laughing, crying, and being ourselves.
I’m not saying everyone should go out and start an I AM THAT GIRL chapter in their city. (But, I mean, if you want to, it’s totally worth it and will change your life.)
I am saying that, no matter how difficult, it’s important not to let fear hold you back from the things you really want. It’s okay to be scared of something you want, as long as it doesn’t paralyze you. Embrace it and let it motivate you.
Because that girl who’s “not afraid?” She’s most likely lying.
Fear is an organic part of life and can be just the thing we need to grow!
- "Do one thing that scares you.." is a well-known quote. Why not give it a try? Start small: eating lunch by yourself or using a Group-on for that yoga class you've wanted to try. Check out how great it feels to look fear in the face and smile!
