With the end of summer and the beginning of another school year quickly approaching, I’ve been doing a lot of self-reflection. Just a few months ago, I wrote a New Year’s resolution to find the one thing that I wanted and needed most at that time: balance.
It took time for me to realize that I couldn’t always put other priorities before my relationships without also compromising my happiness.
You and I might define “other priorities” differently. For me, it was staying on top of my schoolwork. The upcoming history test. Cheerleading practice. Deadlines for the school newspaper. Swept up in it all, I didn’t put time aside for the people I loved and cared about, and, at times, I felt lonely even though I wasn’t alone.
What got me past feeling this sense of isolation, even while being surrounded by people, was finding a support system. The delicate balancing act between all the aspects of your multifaceted life is much more manageable alongside friends and family that have your back.
My support system includes my teammates, who epitomize resilience and strength, the friends I’ve grown up with, my mentor Juliet, and my parents. Find the people in your life that you are grateful for. Although focusing on these relationships may take time away from your “other priorities,” seeking meaningful conversations and life experiences can be incomparably more fulfilling than the high GPA or the pay raise.
Focus on the badasses in your life this week! Instead of spending an extra hour in the library or staying late at work, schedule some time with the people in your life that mean most to you!
