Okay. Can I just mention that I have the hugest friend crush on Emma Watson? She embodies everything I want to be when I grow up and the best thing is that she’s my age. She’s born in the same year only a few months prior and she’s Hermione freaking Granger. She took down a troll during her first year of Wizarding School and still probably got higher than a 4.0. But onto even more important things. She’s curated the hashtag #HeForShe and is a UN global ambassador for women’s rights around the world.
She recently gave a follow-up speech to the one she gave in September kicking off the campaign and I fell in love with her even more. She’s well spoken, modest, and even a little soft in her manner of speaking. She is creating conversations about the rampant sexism so many women often face on a daily basis and she’s making it applicable to daily life. She’s making a much-needed conversation happen simply by making it relevant to everybody. Watson is making sexism pertinent to both dinner conversation and general discourse as well.
During her recent conference, she created a new initiative coined as 10x10x10 to further the conversation about women in leadership and overall participation in every day events. She’s making us regular people actually participate and care about something we should have been discussing all along. And she’s not making people feel stupid while she’s at it. The discourse is polite, to the point and still maintaining a large sense of urgency at the same time. How many leaders can pull that off in this day and age?
Here’s to you, Emma Watson. Thank you beyond words for bringing this agenda to the table and making even the most hardened masochist care about sexism.
