Anyone will tell you that change is hard.
But change is so many things, and “hard” doesn’t seem to do it justice. Change is exhausting, exhilarating, disappointing, amazing, raw, and sometimes exactly what we need.
I just graduated from college in a small town in Pennsylvania, lived at home in Chicago for four months, and then moved to Dublin, Ireland. So, you could say I’ve experienced a little bit of change lately, and it has been a whole lot of things that “hard” just doesn’t seem to cover.
For anyone going through big moves right now, I completely feel you. It’s disorienting to rearrange your entire life, and I often feel like I’m losing parts of myself in the transition. Things that were once simple, like buying groceries, making friends, or setting up the internet, can often feel insurmountable. It feels like life would have been so much simpler if I just stayed home.
But what would life be if we all just stayed home?
Who would I be if I lived in a daydream my entire life? So when I have those moments of giving up, packing up, and going home, this is my advice to myself…
You can do it. You can grow. You can challenge yourself. You can expand your understanding of the world. You can have adventures you never thought possible. You can be the person you want to be. You are the only person standing in the way of that.
Take care of yourself. Take care of your heart and your body and your soul.
Take care so that you can make that leap when the time comes. Take care every day so when that leap surprises you, you are ready anyway. Take care so the adventures can be steady, spontaneous, and overwhelmingly special. You are the only person who can take care of yourself.
Be there. Be there when you meet someone special and odd and interesting. Be there when you walk through a strange new city. Be there when you’re hiking through mountains or swimming in oceans. Be there with yourself when you’re on your own, because you are all the strength you need.
So if you’re thinking about taking a chance, worried about the results, or in the midst of a big transition – keep going! We often surprise ourselves with our flexibility, tenacity, and might…
