Some day we will all find what we are looking for. Or maybe we won’t—maybe we will find something better. Sometimes we find ourselves in crappy situations and bad things happen in our lives, but sometimes those are the very things that lead us to the best things that will ever happen to us. A couple of years ago I overheard a conversation about me between two people that I looked up to. My advisor had been encouraging me to run for student body president and mentioned this to a professor. The professor then began talking about my father’s past and how it reflected negatively on me. When my advisor walked back into his office where I was seated he simply said, “You will run, you will win, and you will show the world how incredible you are.”
This moment convinced me that different people awaken different beasts in you. I was always a little reserved in school, definitely never truly considered running for president, even when it was suggested. Deep down I knew that I was smart enough but there was always that little bit of self- doubt where I would wonder if I could really be successful and carry the weight of such a big title.
Those couple minutes of discouragement turned out to be one of the best things to ever happen to me. It was the final push that I needed to make a huge, scary leap. My time as student body president was invaluable. The people I met, the things I learned, and the places I visited completely changed my life. Happiness is when you make the most of the moment that you are in right now—you just have to believe in yourself.
Can you think of a time when your own belief in yourself gave you that extra push you needed? What did you learn? How did it change you? Tell us about it here!
