After a nearly 10-hour workday, 2 loads of laundry, cooking dinner, and doing the dishes, I was in need of a major attitude adjustment. Thankfully, I was able to recognize this on my own (a feat I am not always able to accomplish) and went looking for inspiration. My first choice for a pick me up when I’m feeling down is always Alexis Jones’ book, I AM THAT GIRL. As I opened to a random page and began to read I found the following statement a mere two and a half sentences later. “Beauty is verb and not an adjective.”
Yep. Attitude realignment complete! Thanks, Lex!
That statement, so simple and so true, completely alleviated any stress I had been feeling. You see, all too often I get caught up in the “ugliness” of life: the chores, the work, the unpleasant encounters, when the truth of the matter is, I have the privilege to do chores in a lovely home I have created for myself. I have the blessed joy of a job that is incredibly challenging, yet something I love with all of my heart. And I have the wisdom to know that any unpleasant encounters will only help me to develop grace and humility as I grow as a professional and as a woman.
Beauty is a verb. It is a way of life. It is choosing to see past the grey skies, the naysayers, and the hard times. Beauty is how we show those around us that we appreciate our time on this earth. It is making our loved ones feel loved and sharing our gifts and our light with everyone we meet. Beauty is knowing we are worth it and helping others to know their worth as well. Beauty is accepting our flaws and embracing them, because embracing our flaws means giving ourselves permission to be unique
Uniqueness is beautiful. Confidence is beautiful. And having confidence in YOUR uniqueness is even more BEAUTY-FULL! There are always going to be those days where life tends to get the better of us. Those days, when you’re struggling to find the beauty in the “everyday,” when you are exhausted and overwhelmed by life, try to remember that you are still HERE! How amazing is that?! You are existing, and your life can be as beautiful as you decide it should be! All you have to do is LIVE your BEAUTY. Smile at a stranger, hold a door open, bring a friend coffee, be kind to someone who may not deserve your kindness. You will immediately feel more beautiful, and those around you will certainly take notice!
So the next time I am down about doing the laundry, I’m going to blast my favorite Pandora station, sing extra loud and fold those t-shirts like each one of them belonged to my favorite celebrity. Why?! Because I am ABLE, I am ALIVE and I am sure as heck going to celebrate every moment I can!
Beauty is a verb, so live your life beautifully, you BEAUTY-FULL soul!
