1 Scoop Leadership, 1 Scoop Passion

Sometimes it feels like everyone else has had their purpose revealed to them via divine intervention or something. How can you possibly choose, when there are so many options? Nowadays, there are hundreds of good causes to get involved with, and thousands of inspiring people to work for. Specifically - this generation of young people like YOU are world-changers on a deep level; over 60% of you report wanting a job that has an impact. But how do you find that impact?

This week is all about The Purpose Formula. IATG is excited to walk you along this mathematical* equation that will help you discover some strategy when it comes to answering the question, “So, what’s the point?” - which is quite possibly the biggest question you will ever answer for yourself. We know you want a life that has some meaning, and we are #HereForIt.

You have everything it takes to discover your purpose - we will help you flesh it out and put it all together piece by piece.

*Actually very little math involved.

So let's dive in.

Activity: The Purpose Formula

Step 1: Free write.

List everything you're passionate about. In your journal, to your friends, at your next dinner event or chapter meeting. What gets you fired up? What causes you to lose sleep? What makes you angry to the point of wanting to change it? What systems do you find unfair?

Step 2: Zoom In

Which of these are your top five? Top three?

Step 3: Define The You

Remember all the leadership identity work we did last month? What kind of leader are you? How do you best lead people? What kinds of environments do you lead best in?

Step 4: Put It All Together

Now you take all these ingredients: your passions, your hopes for the world, your most intense motivators -- and you fill in these blanks:

I AM A LEADER WHO _____________________

WITH A PASSION FOR ____________________

THE PROBLEM I SEE IS ___________________

AND MY HOPE FOR THIS IS ________________

There you have it. A personal, purpose-focused mission statement. The real work begins as you start to think about how to work backwards from that last statement. Take some time to share your Purpose Formula with your chapter members to see if anyone has suggestions for how to engage in that passion right now.

Journal Prompts for Reflection:

  • What is one thing you can do right now to work towards a solution to the problem you are passionate about?
  • What is going well for you in your current life — what do you find fulfilling, meaningful, enjoyable, and important?

  • What isn’t going well for you in your current life — what drains you, makes you stressed and anxious, or wastes your time?

  • Describe a perfect community - whether that’s your school or a city you live in. How do people behave? How do people interact with each other? What does it feel like?

  • What are your hopes and dreams for either your school, your community, or people you care about?
